Curatorial Cooking The Design Practice of Platform21 Amsterdam
From 2006 to 2009, Platform 21 served as a breeding ground for a new design museum that was to be built in Amsterdam. Under the motto ‘we learn by doing’, research was conducted on alternative ways to mount design exhibitions. As a result, design was brought to light in a more democratic way, with greater public involvement. Curatorial Cooking is an overview of the best that Platform 21 produced, presented in an open way that provides insight into what works and what doesn’t. At the same time, Curatorial Cooking encourages the reader to launch project of his or her own. Successful exhibitions like ‘Platform21 = Repairing’, ‘Platform21 = hacking IKEA’ and ‘Me and My Character’ are reviewed by artists, designers and curators. This is an indispensable book for anyone involved in the actual work of organising exhibitions and for anyone interested in exhibition practices and the future of design museums.
