By ‘gestures’, Ton Verstegen means suggestions, indications or hints that people may signal to each other in everyday situations (conversations, for instance) but are not consciously registered. It is by making such gestures that people interact with each other and with their environment. In this book, Ton Verstegen explores this interaction from different perspectives, such as the sociological and the ecological. Architecture plays a special role in this interaction. Ton Verstegen explains this with reference to the work of several architects, such as Neutelings Riedijk Architecten, NOX, Wiel Arets, Michael Bell, Lars Lerup, Peter Wilson and Peter Zumthor. In the first part of the book Ton Verstegen sets forth his argument. This is followed by essays in which he delves more deeply into a number of sub-themes. The book also contains the biographies of important thinkers, writers and architects who are important to the book’s subject matter.
