Michel de Montaigne’s Essais have lost none of their eloquence and relevance in four and a half centuries. This is the conclusion of professor Art education as Critical Tactics Jeroen Lutters, who wrote an inspiring and accessible book about Montaigne as a pedagogue. How do you become a good teacher? In any case, not by letting a student mindlessly stamp information.
At the very beginning of modern times, Montaigne already warns of an education system in which students all have to follow the same mind-numbing lessons. It is precisely the wonder and creativity of both the teacher and the student that should be paramount in modern education. Or as Montaigne put it: “Perhaps you can be learned by all the learning you find in another, but you can only be wise by the wisdom you get from yourself.”
Lutters’ journey through Montaigne’s ideas takes him to the tower room of the Château de Montaigne in the town of Saint-Michel-de-Montaigne. Here Montaigne retired from public life four hundred and fifty years ago to work on himself as an artist on a sculpture. In this book we read how we can do all that.
