Coming Soon: Reprint of Lautner A–Z.
An Exploration of the Complete Built Work

Lautner A–Z. An Exploration of the Complete Built Work will soon be reissued in a new edition, expanded and updated edition of this now indispensable reference on the American architect John Lautner (1911–1994).

Lautner was far ahead of his time. His work is radical, experimental, and strikingly versatile, never falling into repetition. Guided by the wishes of his clients, a keen sensitivity to site, and a strong interest in technical innovation, he continually blurred the boundaries between inside and outside, between architecture and nature. His oeuvre spans more than fifty years and is largely concentrated in and around Los Angeles.

In Lautner A–Z, architects Jan-Richard Kikkert and Tycho Saariste bring together, for the first time, all of Lautner’s built works. The book is the result of a years-long architectural odyssey: from tracking down addresses via Google Earth to studying dusty rolls of drawings in the attics of current owners. Each house is discussed individually, with attention to architectural features, location, and client. In addition, extensive archival research was conducted into demolished buildings and unrealised designs.

The reprint includes updates on various buildings and additional information. As such, Lautner A–Z remains not only a richly illustrated overview, but also a living document of a unique and influential architectural oeuvre, which is very relevant for the architects and students of today.
