The theme of Wanderwort 5. De woorden en de dingen, is taken from the book Les mots et les choses. Une archéologie des sciences humaines (1966) by the French philosopher Michel Foucault. Foucault studied the work of the artist René Magritte and his research into the relationship between object, name, image, depiction and meaning. He conducted a correspondence with Magritte about this. In 1929, Magritte published his cartoon Les mots et les images in the magazine of the surrealists, La Revolution Surréaliste, which contains clarifying statements for his work. The famous painting Ceci n’est pas une pipe is a visual elaboration of his views. For Wanderwort 5, students of ArtEZ University of the Arts have interpreted this theme in surprising ways.
